Apple beefs up customer account security with two-step verification process

The service will initially available in the US, UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.

By CBR Staff Writer

Apple has added a new level of security to iCloud and Apple ID accounts which requires two-step verification to prevent passwords from being stolen.

The two-step-verification requires users to verify their identity using one of their devices before making changes to the user’s account or purchasing an iTunes, App Store, or iBookstore from a new device.

Apple said turning on two-step verification reduces the possibility of someone accessing or making unauthorized changes to the account information at Apple ID or making purchases using their account.

When users sign up for two-factor authentication, Apple will send a 4-digit code through SMS to a trusted device capable of receiving such messages like iPhone.

The company said if user wants to sign in to manage Apple ID at My Apple ID or make an iTunes, App Store, or iBookstore purchase from a new device at any time, they need to enter both your password and a 4-digit verification code.

Apple said after sign in, users can manage their account or make purchases as usual and without both password and the verification code, access to the account will be denied.

The company will also provide users with a 14-digit Recovery Key, which can be used if the users lose or forget a password.
