Amazon Web Services acquired Amiato to boost Redshift service

Deal done in May 2014.

By CBR Staff Writer

Amazon Web Services reportedly acquired a data-migration startup Amiato, last year, in an attempt to boost itspetabyte-scale data warehouse solution Redshift.

Amiato had built a platform capable of collecting unstructured data from NoSQL databases and migrate it to Redshift.

The company’s homepage says: "Amiato’s Schema-lift technology extracts all the data from your NoSQL data stores, automatically transforms it, and loads it continuously into Redshift, Amazon’s petabyte-scale database.

"You can then immediately write SQL, connect Tableau or Excel, or use BI discovery tools like Looker."

The migration facilitates creation of a structure that can be analysed using Amiato’s technology.

Neither Amazon, nor Amiato confirmed the reports about the acquisition. However, TechCrunch noted that Signatures Capital, one of Amiato’s investor listed Amiato as "Acquired by Amazon May 2014."

The publication also cited that Amiato’s Twitter account has been inactive since 2013, and several employees of the company have now listed themselves as Amazon employees on LinkedIn.

Other investors of Amiato include Bobby Yazdani, Data Collective, Andreessen Horowitz and Ignition Partners. The company had previously raised $2m in a round of funding.

According to reports, Amiato was developing a product similar to Amazon Redshift’s data warehousing service even before Redshift was launched.

However, the company later pitched itself as a big data A/B testing platform for semi-structured data.

Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Amazon bought Amiato for the skills of its employees.
