Amazon launches Redshift cloud data warehouse service

Uses techniques that include columnar data storage, advanced compression, and high performance IO

By CBR Staff Writer

Amazon has launched the Amazon Redshift, petabyte-scale data warehouse service in the cloud for customers.

The warehouse uses techniques that include columnar data storage, advanced compression, and high performance IO and network, to achieve higher performance than traditional databases for data warehousing and analytics workloads.

Amazon Web Services Database Services vice president Raju Gulabani said: "With order of magnitude improvements in price/performance, Amazon Redshift makes big data analytics accessible to more people, allowing large organizations to analyze more of their data and smaller ones to afford fast, scalable data warehousing technology."

AWS technology software partners including SAP, IBM, Informatica, Tableau, Attunity, Actuate, Pentaho, Talend, Birst, Roambi and Pervasive have joined MicroStrategy and Jaspersoft to allow the customers use the same tools.

Applications from the partners that allow customers to control the Amazon Redshift are available with pay-as-you-go pricing from the AWS Marketplace.
