After being silent for a week, e-Commerce company Amazon has apologised for a fault in its web hosting service EC2 that brought down websites including Foursquare and Reddit. The company has offered its customers a 10-day credit.
EC2 or Elastic Compute Cloud is a service that offers processing and storage to companies that do not have their own data centres.
Amazon said on its website, "We know how critical our services are to our customers’ businesses and we will do everything we can to learn from this event and use it to drive improvement across our services."
Amazon added that it would "spend many hours over the coming days and weeks improving our understanding of the details of the various parts of this event and determining how to make changes to improve our services and processes."
Seattle-based Amazon said human error caused the outage and that its engineers are woking to prevent a similar problem to happen again.
Amazon’s statement said, "Everything looks to be getting back to normal now."
It added, "Last, but certainly not least, we want to apologise."
Amazon said it would give all customers using the zone that went down a 10-day cloud services credit, whether or not they were affected.
Amazon has not said how many customers were affected.
