2012 Summer Olympics set Twitter record

Twitter reveals trending topics and record tweets during the 2012 Olympics.

The 2012 Olympics have been dubbed the first "social games" as spectators and athletes took to Facebook and Twitter to talk about memorable moments during the games.

Twitter announced that the microblogging site saw more than 150 million tweets about the Olympic Games over the course of 16 days.

Usain Bolt generated 80,000 tweets per minute by winning gold in the 200m sprint and an additional 74,000 tweets per in minute when he won gold in the 100m sprint. Jamaica setting the world record in the men’s 4×100 relay caused another 52,000 tweets per minute.

When Andy Murray won gold in the men’s tennis singles, 57,000 tweets per minute were generated.

Another big tweeting moment was the USA-Spain basketball game. Team USA won gold while generating 41,000 tweets per minute.

Football was found to be the sport that generated the most conversation on Twitter, followed by swimming, track and field, gymnastics and volleyball.

President Barack Obama even got in on the action by giving his personal congratulations to Michael Phelps for setting an Olympic record on Twitter.
