ZTE, Icon PE to construct WiMAX network in Ukraine

Claims to allow subscribers access high-speed wireless broadband services

By CBR Staff Writer

ZTE, a provider of telecommunications equipment and network products, has collaborated with Icon Private Equity to build a 3.5 GHz WiMAX network for Icon PE’s portfolio company, Ukraine High Technologies (UHT) in Ukraine.

ZTE claims that the new WiMAX system allows UHT subscribers to access high-speed wireless broadband services.

Under this phase one contract agreement with UHT, ZTE will provide technical expertise and services to construct a WiMAX network that covers Ukraine’s capital city Kiev and the surrounding areas. Additionally, it will also supply a range of WiMAX products including about 250 WiMAX base stations, 6,000 WiMAX terminal products and network equipment to support the network.

ZTE said that UHT’s entire WiMAX network construction will consist of three phases. Phase one, is currently under development. The company has completed the core network equipment infrastructure and some of the base stations.

Reportedly, with the aim to develop a nationwide WiMAX network in Ukraine, UHT will further expand the network’s coverage from the Kiev City to other districts of the country. It was given a 3.5GHz WiMAX network license in 2006 to provide WiMAX service in Ukraine.

Zhao Songpu, chief executive officer of WiMAX products at ZTE, said: “We are pleased to join our efforts with Icon Private Equity to establish its WiMAX network in Ukraine in order to meet the country’s strong market demand.”
