Vodafone to support National Grid’s voice, data traffic

How can the utility ensure business continuity?

By CBR Staff Writer

Vodafone UK has signed a three-year contract with National Grid to power its laptops and mobile broadband devices with mobile data and voice network.

National Grid meets the energy needs of consumers in the UK and the US. It owns the electricity transmission network in England and Wales and also operates the gas transmission system throughout the UK. It delivers gas to 11 million households and businesses in England.

National Grid expects the £5m contract to help it maintain business continuity and improve the customer response rate. Vodafone will support the entire voice and data traffic of the utility.

Steve Samways, IS asset and vendor manager for National Grid, said: “Having completed a comprehensive tender process, Vodafone proved that they could provide us with robust voice and data services across the UK and demonstrated that they understood the importance of reliable communications for National Grid. We look forward to working with Vodafone for the next three years.”

Vodafone will provide National Grid with embedded SIMs in laptops, telemetry SIMs for diagnosing issues within the electricity and gas network and mobile broadband devices for field engineers to connect with their offices.

Peter Kelly, enterprise director for Vodafone UK, said: “We conducted stringent testing to prove our network capabilities could meet and exceed National Grid’s expectations.”
