Vodafone continues 3G & 4G drive in Portsmouth

Multi-million investment boosts cellular networks as data consumption increases.

By Alexander Sword

Vodafone has launched a multi-million pound investment into its network in Portsmouth to boost 3G and 4G coverage.

The provider is extending its 3G and 4G coverage to over 98 percent of the town’s population. Portsmouth as a whole is currently using one and a half terabytes per day on average in light of network improvements undertaken so far.

By the end of the investment, Vodafone will have upgraded 100 percent of its sites across the town by implementing a 4G overlay system.

Vodafone is this year investing around £1 billion in expanding its nationwide network.

The investment into Portsmouth follows similar roll-outs in other cities. Vodafone has invested heavily in its network in Liverpool, including installations in the flagpoles at the Liverpool One Shopping Centre, as well as in Swindon, Reading and Basingstoke.

"Vodafone’s 4G network is very strong in London, but they do have challenges outside London," comments Kester Mann, Principal Analyst at CCS Insight.

"Some data from RootMetrics and other sources suggests that there is room for improvement.

"If you look at some of the reports, Vodafone and O2 are trailing EE and Three. It is important to take steps outside London."
