Verizon enhances Facebook and Twitter social TV widgets

Allows users to create and send personalised information, in addition to viewing content

By CBR Staff Writer

Verizon has enhanced its recently launched Facebook and Twitter widgets with additional features that give subscribers more ways to connect with others while watching TV. The enhancements include the ability to use onscreen keyboard to send Tweets and the ability for subscribers to update their Facebook status with personalised messages.

The company said that through the free FiOS TV Twitter Widget, subscribers can follow Tweets related to the programme, movie or sporting event they are watching; select from a list of topics to view Tweets associated with topics and trends; search for specific Tweets; and create and save a favourite-topics list.

Reportedly, with the new enhancements, subscribers will be able to use the onscreen keyboard to log on to their Twitter account and post Tweets about the show they are watching, plus choose from a list of predetermined messages they can send as Tweets.

According to the company, FiOS TV subscribers with Facebook accounts can log in to Facebook through the FiOS TV Widget to view their own photos and view their friends’ photos and status updates.

Shawn Strickland, vice president of marketing at Verizon Telecom, said: FiOS TV subscribers are enthusiastically embracing our new social TV experiences and are asking for more. We’re very quickly adding new features so that users can create and send more personalised information, in addition to viewing content. FiOS TV subscribers can count on us to continually expand their enjoyment of social networking on TV with innovative, interactive applications that cable can’t deliver.
