Verizon Business has opened a second data centre in Hong Kong, to enhance the ability to deliver new cloud and data centre services in the region and provide direct access to Verizon’s global network.

This investment is part of the $16.8bn to $17.2bn that Verizon Communications plans to spend this year building, operating and integrating its networking and computing platforms.

According to Verizon, the new 3,000sqmt facility, located in the iTech Tower in Tsuen Wan, will feature reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology and provide interconnections with the four main local carriers as well as with Verizon’s global network.

In addition, the centre will contain a new private IP node to extend the company’s metro network footprint offering companies direct access to Verizon’s MPLS Private IP. A public IP node also will be located in the centre, Verizon said.

The company said that the new facility, the ninth Verizon data centre in the Asia-Pacific region, has direct access to the submarine cable landing station and becomes the third point of presence in Hong Kong for Verizon’s global mesh network. The new centre will also provide internet data centre services for multinational customers looking to colocate internet servers or data networking or voice equipmen.

In addition, local customers will have access to a range of other services including, onsite technical support services; automated server monitoring and remediation service; remote backup and restore services; onsite media storage management and help desk services.

Yali Liu, director of network planning for Verizon in Asia-Pacific, said: Our latest Hong Kong centre is strategically located at the gateway to mainland China and is especially important to our clients who want to expand business into greater China and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region.
