UK consumers getting better information related to broadband speed

93% of mystery shoppers were offered details of the probable connections speeds from an ISP.

A new report from UK communications regulator Ofcom said that the consumers have been receiving better information on the broadband speeds that they are about to get from a new internet service provider (ISP).

The UK communications regulator revealed that about in 96% of telephone enquiries, mystery shoppers were offered with details of the broadband connection speeds that they could expect from their providers compared to 93% in 2012.

Ofcom Consumer Group director, Claudio Pollack, said the results of the agency’s mystery shopping are encouraging, with the quality of information being provided to consumers at the point of sale improving overall.

"However, the research has identified areas where providers need to do more to improve, particularly in terms of providing speeds information spontaneously and early in the sales process," Pollack said.

"We’re already working with providers to ensure they tighten up their sales processes where we’ve identified concerns."

About 40% of mystery shoppers were offered information regarding factors affecting their broadband speed, while about 17% of them were notified about the actual speed that may be less than expected.

According to the regulator, telecom firms including EE, Karoo and Plusnet performed above all by offering information on speeds in every single call, while TalkTalk, Virgin Media and BT Total Broadband have reported improved results than 2012.
