Twitter partners with MediaTek for smart feature phone project

Twitter’s alliance with Taiwanese chip maker, MediaTek, will allow the microblogging app to be preinstalled into MediaTek’s mobile middleware platform for feature phones.

The partnership seeks to make the microblogging service available to consumers in developing where the majority of Internet-ready handsets are cheaper mobile phones.

Consumers in emerging markets will soon be able to access Twitter with the same capability as those who own expensive smartphones.

MediaTek will preload the Twitter application in its reference design for mobile devices which will also smart-feature phones to run on minimal memory and hardware requirements.

"Our new partnership with Twitter further reinforces MediaTek’s focus on providing differentiated services and value for handset brands, giving them the means to offer affordable, compelling and differentiated mobile solutions to consumers in key emerging markets ," said Cheng-Te Chuang, Corporate Vice President of MediaTek.

Mobile internet usage is increasing in emerging markts. According to an Informa Telecoms and Media study, emerging markets will make up 60% of the mobile market in 2013.

By preinstalling the Twitter app onto its feature phones, MediaTek mobile devices will still be able availalbe at affordable prices but with upgraded internet service.
