Telephone and Internet access to fly high at Farnborough

Wireless LAN Source (WLS) will install a non-permanent network at the Farnborough International Air Show to provide the participants with wireless and fixed telephony and Internet access.

WLS, which is the official IT and telecoms provider for the air show for the next six years, claims the network to be the largest non-permanent network ever built in the UK.

Andy Coulson, head of operations for Farnborough International Air Show, said: We were impressed by the solution offered to deliver a reliable, flexible, easy-to-deploy and cost-effective service. The range of products which Wireless LAN Source uses to build the network means we can offer a range of bespoke services to the exhibitors attending our event, providing them with the necessary tools to help them make the most of their day.

The air show is organised by Farnborough International, a subsidiary of the Society of British Aerospace Companies. The show will be held in July 2008 and marks the 60th anniversary of the event at its Farnborough home, and the centenary of the first powered, sustained flight in the UK, undertaken by Samuel Cody from the Farnborough airfield in 1908. The seven-day event is expected to be attended by 1,500 exhibitors from 35 countries.

WLS has been installing IT and telecoms infrastructure at the site to provide 300Mbps bandwidth, over 50km of fibre, 237Gbps of wireless bandwidth and over 6000 temporary cabled network points. WLS plans to deliver 2000 VoIP connections and up to 10,000 concurrent Wi-Fi connections.

WLS works in partnership with Xirrusa, a developer of Enterprise wireless LAN architectures, and Repeatit, a provider of Fixed Broadband Wireless Access.
