Telefonica launches TCloud API for cloud computing interoperability

Focuses on adding network intelligence, reliability and security features to cloud computing

By CBR Staff Writer

Telefonica has released the TCloud API for Cloud Computing interoperability and submitted it to the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), the organisation bringing the IT industry together to collaborate on systems management standards development, validation, promotion and adoption.

The company said that the submission will be reviewed by the DMTF Open Cloud Standards Incubator, which is currently working to develop recommendations for cloud management standards.

Telefonica said that the TCloud is focused on adding network intelligence, reliability and security features to cloud computing empowered by enhanced telecom network integration. TCloud also aims to extend cloud computing models providing control to cloud computing customers.

According to Telefonica, the TCloud API is based on vCloud API specification 0.8, as published by VMware. In essence, compatibility for the main operations and data types defined in vCloud are maintained in TCloud. It provides extensions on advanced cloud computing management capabilities including additional shared storage for service data, network element provisioning, monitoring, snapshot management and so on.

In addition, the Telefonica aims to foster an open standardisation approach around cloud computing interoperability, encouraging organisations to join and contribute to this initiative.

Winston Bumpus, DMTF president, said: “DMTF is very pleased to receive Telefonica’s submission of its TCloud API specification. As we continue to work toward defining the best approach to cloud standards, contributions from members like Telefonica help lay the groundwork for future standard development in this space.”
