techUK has launched SmarterUK, an initiative for the UK that plans to champion the nation’s smart infrastructure development.

It will focus on three main areas: Energy and Utilities, Transport and Smart Cities.

SmarterUK will be chaired by Dan Byles, former Conservative MP.

"Crucially, we believe that the possibilities of smart infrastructure should be high in the mind of all regions as they are granted increased devolved powers," he said.

The body is an evolution of SmartGrid GB, run by techUK since 2011, which works to modernise the UK’s energy system.

"With our existing areas of expertise, world-leading communications infrastructure and world-leading, innovative companies, the UK is well placed to be global leader in the market," said Julian David, techUK CEO.

The first event organised by the new body will take place on 1 December; jointly organised with the National Grid, it will focus on energy.
