Skype now available for Android devices

VoIP firm also grabs new CEO from Cisco

By CBR Staff Writer

Skype has released Skype for Android, built for smartphones running Android OS version 2.1 or above.

With this new release, the majority of smart phone users globally will now be able to make calls using Skype while out and about using either a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection such as GPRS, EDGE or 3G.

The new application enables users to make calls to landline or mobile phones; send and receive instant messages to one or a group of friends on Skype; see when Skype contacts are online and available to call or chat; and receive calls on their Skype online number.

With this release, Skype is now available on three of the most popular mobile platforms today: Android, iOS and Symbian.

In other Skype news, the VoIP provider has appointed a new CEO. Tony Bates will be joining the firm from networking giant Cisco, where he was a SVP. He will start work as CEO at the end of October and will also sit on Skype’s board of directors.

"We are thrilled to bring on Tony Bates as Skype’s new CEO," said Miles Flint, chairman of the company’s board of directors. "His record of achievement and significant operational and management expertise, cultivated over a distinguished tenure at one of the world’s preeminent technology companies, presents a unique opportunity for Skype that we are enthusiastic to embrace."

Bates added: "Skype is not only a powerful global brand but also a global technology leader in Internet communications. There are extraordinary opportunities ahead for Skype and I am eager to lead the company through this exciting juncture in its continuing transformation. I look forward to working with Skype’s management team and talented employees to engineer the next wave of game-changing products and services for our users."

In August this year the company filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the US.
