Security firm Secom is planning to acquire a majority stake in Tokyo Electric Power’s (Tepco) data centre division, At Tokyo, for $634m.

Tepco owns about 80% of At Tokyo which runs a number of data centres across Tokyo including one including one spread over 140,000 squre metres.

The acquisition is expected to improve Secom’s data centre business which was launched in 2000.

The sale is part of Tepco’s restructuring efforts which is planning to shed JPY700bn ($9bn) in assets under a reconstruction plan approved by the Japanese government in May this year.

Secom, which has five data centres in Japan, is currently present in the US, UK, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

The company employs more than 48,000 people in nearly 1,500 locations worldwide, with assets exceeding £8bn and an annual turnover of £5bn from nearly two million customers.

Secom offers security services and products that include electronic alarm system, CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) surveillance system, access control system, security guard services, sensitive material detection services.
