The handset features what Samsung claims is the world’s first Full HD Super AMOLED display and five-inch with 441ppi.

The Galaxy S 4 also uses Gorilla Glass 3 which the makers claim means the screen is harder to break – a common complaint of the handset’s main rival – Apple’s iPhone.

Top features of the new handset include ‘Samsung Smart Pause’ which allows users to control the screen using their eyes.

The device supports HSPA+42 Mbps and 4G LTE which Samsung believes will mean wherever the user is the world, they can rely on "perfect" connectivity.

Samsung’s LTE version supports up to six different band sets which allows it to function in most LTE coverage areas as well as enabling global LTE roaming. Furthermore, TDD/FDD LTE Dual Mode version will be introduced later this year.

The handset has been the subject of intense media speculation and most of the rumours made earlier this week appear to be true.

It will also feature ‘Air View’: allowing users to hover a finger to preview the content of an email, S Planner, image gallery or video without having to open it and ‘Air Gesture’ letting you change a music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand. The phone will also feature voice control.

It will also feature a dual camera and can take simultaneous photos and videos using both the rear and front cameras and then blend the pictures together, with its 13 megapixel rear camera.

The ‘Story Album’ also curates content, such as SNS posts, memos, location and weather information as well as photos and videos to create a photo album which is personalised around your timeline of special occasions and events

Other features include ‘Group Play’ the ability to enjoy music, photos and games with those around you without a WiFi or even cellular signal.

And, ‘S Health’ software which Samsung’s publicity claims to "empower your life" by keeping you up-to-date with health and wellbeing information through a range of accessories.

Simon Stanford, vice president of IM division Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland said: "We are restless about innovation, and are constantly striving to create unique experiences for our customers that will transform their lives.

"The Galaxy S4 does just that. We have listened to what consumers around the world want and taken the intuitive technology from the Galaxy S III a step further. Combining this with superior hardware has led us to develop the Galaxy S4, the ultimate smartphone inspired by our customers."
