Powerwave Technologies rolls out new mobile communications unit

To support concurrent call volume and data access

By CBR Staff Writer

Powerwave Technologies has rolled out its Rapid Mobile Deployment Unit (RMDU), a compact mobile communications site to support concurrent call volume and data access. The announcement was made at the International Annual Conference and Expo of APCO – the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International.

According to Powerwave, the RMDU use cases include: establishing a temporary wireless coverage system in an area devastated by natural disaster; supporting communications for military deployments; supplementing existing access to wireless voice and data services; and setting up a mobile data center for radio communications during incident management and command and control operations.

For wireless communications, the RMDU is suitable for ‘grey area’ coverage where wireless service can be spotty or non-existent, yet service providers must still comply with FCC mandates, including Enhanced 911 (E911), the company said.

Powerwave said that the RMDU combines its rugged VersaFlexTM 7.0 equipment shelter, or MicroFlex Outdoor Equipment Cabinet, with a hydraulic-powered telescoping tower. The RMDU is offered in a variety of configurations ranging from 3,500- to 22,500-pound GVWR-rated trailers.

The company said that the RMDU, configured with the VersaFlex 7.0 Equipment Shelter, offers enhanced equipment capacity, providing ease of maintenance to accommodate additional gear and new technologies.. The RMDU also comes with an integrated self-contained generator for power consumption and run-time needs.

Khurram Sheikh, chief product and development officer of Powerwave, said: “The product is highly customisable and remarkably flexible to meet the needs of a wide range of applications, from disaster recovery and command centre operations to military communications, including interior networks and ship-to-shore communications, oil rig platforms, large-scale event support, parking garage deployment applications and temporary UHF/VHF television broadcast.”
