Petabit core router bolsters data centre backbone networks

Huawei delivers industry's largest capacity core router for next-gen data centre-centric networks.

By Ellie Burns

Promising to deliver the largest capacity in the industry, the NetEngine 9000 (NE9000) core router was unveiled at Huawei’s 2015 Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen, China.

Today’s backbone networks are under pressure to answer the challenges presented by the rapid growth of Ultra High Definition (UHD) videos and migration to cloud services. Operators have to deal with the large backbone bandwidth and a reduction of network delays resulting from services such as FBB 4K/8K and MBB 2K video.

Due to these challenges, and the fact that a predicted 70% of services will be deployed onto the cloud by 2020, operators are turning to the data centre (DC) for answers. Huawei asserts that DC-centric interconnection will be the trend of the next-generation backbone networks.

The NE9000 petabit core router helps operators to simplify the network, reduce the network delay, and provide what Huawei calls an ‘inspiring’ experience to users. In short, it is a solution in-line with the backbone network’s evolution towards DC-centric interconnection.

The NE9000 supports the industry’s first 2T router line card, in addition to supporting SDN/NFV technology, meeting the requirements of the next generation DC-centric network.

Opening network capability, through virtualised, automated, and intellectualised technologies, it can flexibly adjust the network routing, quickly adapt to the dynamic variation of DC backbone traffic and effectively improve network resources utilisation.

Supporting a maximum capacity of 8 Tbit/s per slot, the cluster system capacity scales to 8 Pbit/s which results in a download speed of 12,000 4K videos per second. The industry’s 2T line card can provide high port density of 100GE with wire speed.
