The rise in monthly active users (MAUs) has helped Facebook post a 39% increase in its second quarter revenue to $4.04bn.

The number of people who use Facebook on at least a monthly basis increased 13% to 1.49 billion as of 30 June 2015. Mobile MAUs were 1.31 billion, an increase of 23% year-over-year.

Mobile advertising revenue represented about 76% of advertising revenue for Q2, up from about 62% for the same period last year.

Facebook has however reported a 9.1% decline in its Q2 net income to $719m, or $0.25 diluted earnings per share.

Daily active users (DAUs) were 968 million and mobile DAUs were 844 million by the end of June this year.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: "This was another strong quarter for our community.

"Engagement across our family of apps keeps growing, and we remain focused on improving the quality of our services."
