Microsoft to link together Skype and Lync by June

The move is part of the software maker's effort to link its instant messaging and video calling service with its products.

Microsoft is planning to link its Lync enterprise IM, audio and video conferencing server with its Skype service by June 2013. This will allow businesses to call and send messages to Skype users through the Lync service.

Microsoft Skype division president, Tony Bates, said in a statement that all Lync users would be able to share presence, IM, and voice communications with Skype users by June 2013. Lync-to-Skype video connectivity is planned for some time in the next 18 months.

"This move will begin to enable what we call B2X," Bates said.

"B2X places the focus of business communication on enabling human interactions.

"B2X puts people first and looks at communications in a unified way, not as disparate technology silos focused on one task or protocol."

Microsoft is also planning to launch Lync Room System, which is a meeting-room conferencing system featuring high-definition touch displays, high-definition cameras, wideband audio, and table-top touch meeting controls that are managed by the Lync Room System Edition.

Microsoft has also collaborated with hardware partners including Crestron, Lifesize, Polycom and Smart Technologies to develop and launch LRS products.
