Microsoft conquers Atlantic Ocean with subsea cables

Subsea fiber optic cables used to connect data centres across the world.

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft has partnered with several companies to connect its data centres across the world using subsea fiber optic cables.

The company is working with Hibernia and Aqua Comms to link its data centres in North America to Ireland and the UK.

Microsoft said the deals will give users faster access to their information and lower latency rates.

The company has also joined a consortium of firms that are working to construct the first-ever physical landing station connecting North America to Asia.

The consortium includes China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, KT Corporation with TE SubCom.

The New Cross Pacific (NCP) Cable Network aims to provide faster data connections for customers, and assist Microsoft in competing on cloud costs.

Microsoft managing director of network enablement David Crowley said: "Over the past 9 months, Microsoft has been significantly investing in subsea and terrestrial dark fiber capacity by engaging in fiber partnerships that span multiple oceans and continents.

"Competition in the cloud and infrastructure space continues to heat up. But it’s not a battle that will be won on just cloud or infrastructure alone, but instead on holistic innovation and providing value to customers from the "sea to the sky".
