Major European data centre evacuated after bomb threat

Police have not yet ruled out an act of terrorism in German hub.

By Joao Lima

Amadeus data centre in Erding, Germany was evacuated at 7am on Thursday 7th May following a bomb threat.

The facility in the Aufhausen region of Bavaria is an important hub for the air travel and hotel industry hosting services for airlines like BA and Qantas.

Reports suggest the threat was made via an online form addressed to Swabia’s police headquarters.

The police evacuated the centre shortly after and deployed four explosives dogs and more than 30 officers and specialists from the state criminal police.

A controlled explosion was carried out on-site, but later revealed to not have been an explosive device. Police are still searching as to the identify of the message sender.

The Amadeus data centre has an average response time of 0.5 seconds and is arrayed with more than 7,500 servers accessing 95% of global scheduled network airline seats and undertaking over 1.6 billion data transactions a day.

The data centre holds the majority of all European travel and hotel bookings, and an outage is said to risk bringing air traffic to a standstill.
