New government test results have reportedly shown that a high-speed wireless broadband network being launched by LightSquared could interfere GPS systems.
GPS systems are used for aviation, military operations, health, etc. It is believed that LightSquared’s network would use airwaves adjacent to those used by GPS.
In January, LightSquared was given the approval to build a high-speed wireless network across the country by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The FCC’s approval is part of the wiser plan of the government to cover at least 92% of the US with high speed wireless broadband network by 2015.
LightSquared executive vice-president Jeffrey Carlisle said such tests are unsurprising and that both services could co-exist. He said that it is important to find a solution to the interference.
Among the possible solutions are modifying LightSquared’s antenna and installing better filters on GPS receivers.
