The acquisition follows last week’s $175m acquisition of Northrop Grumman’s electro-optical systems business. L-3 also acquired Global Communications Solutions, a provider of portable satellite communications equipment and products, in May 2007.
HSA will be integrated as a business unit within the L-3 Nautronix division in Australia and extends L-3’s presence with offices in Fremantle, Sydney and Wollongong, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand. Mike Gallagher, managing director at L-3 Nautronix, will head the business.
L-3’s Nautronix operations provide wireless underwater communications, undersea test ranges, diver computers, and electronic console map displays. HSA compiles, produces, and maintains nautical charts, and supplies customized software and IT systems for the Australian Hydrographic Services, the Royal Australian Navy, and Land Information New Zealand.
New York-based L-3 Communications employs 64,000 people worldwide and is a prime contractor in aircraft modernization and maintenance, command, control, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C3ISR) systems and government services. It also provides high technology products, subsystems and systems with reported 2007 sales of $14bn.
