IIJ establishes Layer 2 connectivity with NTT DoCoMo

Claims to provide security equivalent to IP-VPN and other closed network based remote access services

By CBR Staff Writer

Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) said that it has established Layer 2 connectivity between its IP network and the NTT DoCoMo packet network.

In addition, the IIJ Direct Access that creates a private connection to the corporate LAN from a mobile environment will be accessible from terminals using the IIJ Mobile Service/Type D starting on November 24, 2009.

According to IIJ, Direct Access is a remote access offering that provides closed network connections to the corporate LAN using existing internet access lines. A remote access environment is created with a closed network connection between the company’s remote access device ID Gateway located at the customer’s premises, and a mobile terminal. The terminal does not have a global IP address, it is divorced from the internet environment and creates a remote access environment that is free from internet-born attacks.

The company claims that the new offering provides security equivalent to IP-VPN and other closed-network-based remote access services, but at a lower cost. The customer’s ID gateway server, which resides on the customer’s network, provides access restrictions for each user group.

In addition, a closed network connection can be established with the corporate LAN by connecting to IIJ Mobile and the existing network resources can be used, reducing the time required to introduce the service, the company added.
