Huawei unveils new triple-mode LTE modem

Supports LTE, UMTS and GSM networks

By CBR Staff Writer

Huawei has unveiled a new triple-mode LTE modem that is compatible with LTE, UMTS and GSM network standards.

The new E398 modem, based on Qualcomm’s MDM9200TM chipset, enables end-users to surf with high-speed provided on LTE technology while allowing users to switch to UMTS or GSM networks simultaneously. In addition, it also supports multiple mainstream LTE frequencies, the company said.

Huawei said that the new triple-mode LTE modem will be initially launched in the LTE/GSM shared network in Sweden operated by Net4Mobility, a joint infrastructure venture between Tele2 Sweden and Telenor Sweden. The same operators have selected Huawei to develop their nationwide LTE network in Sweden in terms of both infrastructure and terminal offerings.

James Chen, managing director of Huawei Nordic Office, said: The E398 is designed to address increasing requirements for operators to introduce commercial LTE services with flexible evolution roadmaps.

“With the E398, the end-users don’t have to wait for the completion of the LTE network before they can enjoy 10 times higher speeds, as well as a continuous surfing experience. With rapid growth in the LTE market, Huawei will see the E398 modem as a start for future cooperation with partners all over the world.
