Huawei to expand China169 backbone network for China Unicom

To enable more communication services for China Unicom’s customers

By CBR Staff Writer

Huawei, a provider of telecommunications network services for operators, said that it has been chosen by China Unicom to expand and optimise China169 backbone network, which will be flattened and upgraded to enable more communication services for China Unicom’s customers, in a move to accommodate rapid subscriber and traffic growth.

The company said that the NE5000E cluster router system will provide four new backbone nodes in Chengdu, Xi’an, Chongqing and Wuhan. The NE5000E 2+2 cluster system has a 2.56Tb/s port capacity and can be enhanced to 200Tb/s to accommodate future traffic growth.

According to Huawei, with the new deployment, the capacity and stability of networks in the four regions is expected to be enhanced and will ease network traffic pressure in Southwest China and Northwest China.

Huawei’s NE5000E core routers and cluster system have been deployed for operators including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, France Telecom, Philippine Globe and SingTel.

Zha Jun, president of network at Huawei, said: “With Huawei’s cluster router and professional services expertise, the upgrade of this network will support China Unicom’s Broadband Acceleration Strategy and provide the enhanced capacity, flexibility and scalability necessary to address the bandwidth demands of its growing consumer base.”

The project is expected to begin in March 2010, and the enhanced network will be operational by June 2010.
