HP, Dell and Intel create data centre standard

Redfish aims to improve scalability, performance and security at reduced costs.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

A group of leading tech firms, including HP, Dell, Emerson and Intel, has announced the formation of Redfish, a specification for data centres and systems management.

Redfish, which is under development, uses a lightweight code and the latest network interfaces that enable access to data using script-based programming methods.

The protocol aims to improve scalability, performance and security while enabling remote management at reduced costs.

"Additionally, Redfish will enable access to massive amounts of information and efficiently translate the data into actionable insights for system monitoring and management," the group said in a statement.

The group added that the benefits make Redfish the most "comprehensive" data centre protocol since the launch of the Intelligent Platform Interface in 1998.

Redfish will be submitted to the Distributed Management Task Force for consideration by the recently created Scalable Platform Management Forum, which has been chartered to publish a standard in this space.
