How efficient can energy usage really be?

An energy management firm and data centre specialist may soon have the answer.

By Duncan Macrae

Data centre and IT infrastructure specialist, Onyx Group, has drafted in energy management firm Utilitywise to help improve the efficiency of its facilities.

Onyx Group has five large data centres located around the UK that use around 15 megawatts of energy each year. Utilitywise has been asked to identify the most efficient energy use and energy procurement to assist the continued growth of the company.

Neil Stephenson, CEO of Onyx Group, said: "We’re in an industry that uses a lot of energy, so it made sense to bring in energy consultants to advise on how we can reduce our energy consumption. We want to give our customers the best possible service at the right cost, which means offering exceptional service that is energy efficient. We have a lot in common with Utilitywise and they were the only company we wanted to work with on this aspect of our business."

To improve energy efficiency at Onyx Group, Utilitywise will install its latest digital platform, Utility Insight, that provides insight into the way companies uses energy and water. It converts data from utility metres, sub-metres and monitoring systems into easy-to-understand information that can be viewed on any computer with web access.

Utilitywise will also provide retrospective and ongoing bill checking, flexible energy procurement and fixed price energy deals that are secured at the right time to achieve the best energy deal available.

Geoff Thompson, CEO of Utilitywise, said: "Those who control their energy use can become more competitive than their rivals. This is especially true in today’s economic climate where energy remains a major cost. Utilitywise is here to advise companies on how to procure and use energy in the most cost-effective way."
