Gulf Bridge International signs submarine cable deal with Vodafone Qatar

New cable system to connect all the countries of the Gulf region

By CBR Staff Writer

Gulf Bridge International, a privately owned submarine cable operator in the Middle East, has entered into an agreement with Vodafone Qatar, to land GBI’s submarine cable in Qatar.

According to GBI, the new cable system, which will utilise new subsea fibre cable technology, will connect all the countries of the Gulf region to each other and provide onward connectivity to Europe and Asia. It has a design capacity of up to 5 terabits per second on certain cable sections and will connect to Gulf countries through a core ring that can re-route traffic.

The company claims that the launch of new cable system will provide telecom operators and other communications companies, both in the region and globally, with choice, value, diversity and resilience.

Ahmed Mekky, CEO of GBI, said: “Partnering with Vodafone Qatar takes GBI one step closer to fulfilling our implementation plans. We believe that once operational, the GBI cable system will play a key role in facilitating communications and enabling the region to grow both socially and economically.”
