Facebook tackles video theft with new tech tool

New tool will initially be available to a small group of partners.

By CBR Staff Writer

Facebook has introduced a new tool to identify unauthorised video posts, alerting creators of clips that have been reposted without their permission.

The new video-matching technology will help video creators detect duplicates of those already uploaded.

Facebook said in a blog post, "This technology is tailored to our platform, and will allow these creators to identify matches of their videos on Facebook across pages, profiles, groups, and geographies.

"Our matching tool will evaluate millions of video uploads quickly and accurately, and when matches are surfaced, publishers will be able to report them to us for removal."

The company will allow creators to access a web-based dashboard, enabling them to find videos they would like to monitor.

If the system identifies a matching video on the social networking site, the creator will be allowed to report the clips to the company.

The new tool will be initially available to a small group of partners, including media firms, multichannel networks and individual video creators.
