Facebook will shut its Creative Labs, which allowed its employees to pursue their own projects for new apps.
Facebook has already taken three apps including disappearing photo service, "Slingshot"; chat-room app, "Rooms;" and video-making app "Riff" out of iOs and Google Play app stores.
Creative Labs was a two-year experiment which was inspired from the company’s "hackathons", where binge-coding sessions are organized, where developers had to work together to create a prototype app or service and Slingshot was one of the app that came out of the initiative.
Slingshot was a Snapchat style app that allowed users to take a photo or video and then send it to friends, and the receiver could respond to it with their own photos or videos, but the app failed to evince desired interest amongst users.
Facebook said: "We’re continuing to embrace the spirit of creative risk-taking by continuing to allow some smaller development teams within the company to experiment with new ideas for standalone apps."
Facebook is presently focusing on different aspects of technology including artificial-intelligence and drones to beam Internet signals, reported Cnet.
The company previously bought Virtual Reality (VR) headset maker Oculus to experiment with Virtual Reality and it has its Internet.org initiative which is designed to provide internet to those living in the remote parts of the world.
