Facebook sees future in augmented reality

News: Zuckerberg remained tight lipped over specific developments at Facebook.

By CBR Staff Writer

Facebook eyes to explore augmented reality in the future, confirmed the social media giant’s co-founder Mark Zuckerberg at Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit.

The social media’s intention to play with virtual reality isn’t news anymore, following its takeover of Oculus which is already delivering units in partnership with Samsung and is awaiting the launch of its flagship headset.

While the virtual reality (VR) based innovations will be able to offer immersive entertainment experiences, augmented reality (AR) can lead to development of practical applications which can be applicable in the real world.

He told Vanity Fair that VR could transfrom personal moments, drawing upon the upcoming birth of his first child. He siad: "My wife and I are having a baby sometime soon. I’m really looking forward to not just capturing a photo of her first steps, but trying to capture that moment and be able to share that with her family and all our other close friends, and have that ability to be there and feel it and see what it’s like not just in a photo or video," he said.

Zuckerberg, however, did not reveal much about Facebook’s AR try-outs.

Instead he explained how VR, which has moved ahead with photos and video usage in the recent times from texts, is set to be the next big computing platform.
