Australia’s state-owned National Broadband Network (NBN) has awarded Sweden-based Ericsson a contract to build and operate a wireless network to cover the remote parts of Australia.
The A$1.1bn ($1.2bn) contract is a part of government’s A$35.9bn project to provide fast Internet connections to remote Australian homes, according to a report by Reuters.
Under the terms, Ericsson will build and operate a wireless network over the next ten years. The network will cover the remote parts of Australia that cannot be serviced by fiber-optic cable.
NBN Head of Corporate Services Kevin Brown said, "The mix of technologies we are deploying allows us to offer the most cost-effective rollout of high-speed broadband across our large and sparsely populated continent."
So far, NBN has awarded over 11 contracts which is estimate to be up to A$7bn.
