By Hannah Williams

Equinix, has joined the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), the global, member-supported organisation which promotes the accelerated growth of the Industrial Internet of Things.

As a member of the organisation, the company gains the ability to engage the IoT community and contribute to innovation and development of best practices around industrial networks.

The industrial internet offers a unique and well-defined set of technical and business requirements for data collection, data retention, analytics and hybrid compute, all of which are suited for an Interconnection Oriented Architecture (IOA), similar to those deployed inside Equinix data centres.

Ryan Mallory, Global vice president, Solution enablement, Equinix said: “Interconnection acts as a central nervous system for the Internet of Things, enabling all vital functions for achieving efficiency and agility. Equinix, with the IIC, will help make this happen.

By coordinating ecosystem initiatives to securely connect, control and integrate assets and systems of assets with people, processes and data, the IIC assists in promoting the industrial growth of IoT.

IIC founding members include companies such as Intel, IBM, EMC, Schneider Electric, Huawei and others.

Dr. Richard Soley, executive director, Industrial consortium said: “In the emerging and complex Internet of Things arena, enterprises want their data, applications, devices and clouds services to interconnect and operate securely.

“We look forward to the interconnection expertise that Equinix brings with respect to system integration and security for the connected ecosystem and to the contributions they will make in helping to accelerate the adoption of the industrial internet.”
