Endeca unveils search/BI combo

Latitude relieves BI backlog, says firm

By Steve Evans

Endeca has unveiled a search and business intelligence (BI) combination that it says will help end users find and better understand structured and unstructured data.

Endeca Latitude runs on the firm’s MDEX engine and offers a hybrid search-analytical database which can bring together information regardless of its original type, format, or source. Endeca says that this can enable organisations to ask questions it may not have known to ask.

Paul Sonderegger, chief strategist at Endeca, told CBR that the new product can relieve the BI backlog that can build up between the reporting, exploring and predicting processes. Every report, he said, can raise new questions that need answering. By combining dynamic search with its analytics technology Endeca can help end users find and make sense of information from within the data warehouse and other internal sources as well as external sources such as Twitter, Facebook and blog pages.

The MDEX engine supports IT-managed data governance and data security as well as industry standards such as XQuery, XML, and SOA, the firm said.

The firm has also introduced what it calls consumer ease-of-use. With end-users rather than IT increasingly carrying out searches products need to be quick and easy to understand. Using Endeca’s Guided Navigation technology Latitude companies can redesign dashboards to suit end user needs. This also helps IT departments to build end user BI apps on Latitude’s Discovery framework.

It also means that less technical users should be able to use the system with minimal training, something Sonderegger said was vital to today’s business where time is all important.

"We’re the only BI company to have succeeded in eCommerce and we’re bringing that expertise into the enterprise," he told CBR. "End users, who are less technical, tend to be the ones doing the search so they shouldn’t have to train to be able to use it."
