Emerson Network Power launches new rack cooling system

The company's new cooling system adds to its recent upgrade to the Knurr rack unit.

By Hannah Williams

Emerson Network Power have announced the launch of its Liebert DCL modular rack cooling system, which is aimed at small to medium data centres within Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

The new DCL product has been developed from a rack unit which was sold under the brand of Knurr brand which Emerson acquired in 2006.

It also includes added iCOM (Intelligent Communications and Monitoring) control which can be identified as a common platform that is used with Emerson Network Power’s thermal management products. With up to 24 percent higher capacity, it has also been transferred to the Liebert brand.

The addition of the iCOM enables the units to monitor the supply and adjust the fan speed, in order to provide the right amount of cold air to the servers.

Mark Deguara, National Product Manager or Emerson Network Power Australia said: “Cooling is one of the most important- and costly- functions of a modern, high-density data centre. Up to 50 percent of the power used in a data centre goes to the infrastructure used to cool down the computer equipment in the facility.”

Emerson’s Liebert DCL units add cold water cooling close to the heat source- the IT equipment- for better efficiency. Closed loop and hybrid loop cooling are then combined, with one unit containing and cooling up to four racks.

Degura added: “The more efficient the cooler, the lower the cost to the data centre, which in large facilities amounts to millions of dollars every year.”

The units used are to have Emerson’s LIFE remote diagnostics inputted, with connection to experts at Emerson’s own data centre for a more proactive maintenance based on performance trends.

Kevin Brady, Vice President of Thermal Management for Emerson Network Power in EMEA said: “This is a product designed for decision makers who want to ensure low running costs over time but still have maximum availability now.”
