EE retains operator crown as Vodafone speeds past Three

Three dismisses report findings, saying their focus is on 'direct feedback from customers who consistently tell us they are happy.'

By Alexander Sword

EE is increasing its lead over other UK mobile operators, according to the latest figures from RootMetrics.

EE won in all six categories, while Three finished second in all categories apart from network speed. There was some jostling for position among the operators; Vodafone overtook Three to take second position in network speed.

“Three is feeling the pressure on its speed results at the UK level as other operators push 4G rollouts faster,” said the report.

A Vodafone spokesperson responded to this, saying: “We are pleased to see that this report recognises the benefits our customers are getting with our investment in another £1 billion in our network and services this year, following a similar investment last year.”

However, Three appeared to dismiss the results of the report, saying to CBR:

“Three appreciates the role that independent tests play but we focus on direct feedback from customers who consistently tell us they are happy with the performance of the network.

“That performance will improve further with our continuing 4G rollout, the upcoming launch of VoLTE and the deployment of low frequency spectrum.”

EE took the top score of 89.4 out of 100 in the tests, the same as its score in the last report six months ago, while other operators saw their scores decline. Three’s fell from 86.2 to 84.7, while Vodafone’s fell from 78.8 to 74.5. In last place in the report, O2 saw its score fall from 79.5 to 72.7.

The report also showed EE and Three winning outright or tying in metro areas as winner 90 and 33 times respectively. EE stands out for speed, while Three was highly reliable.

The report is based on 1.1 million samples taken while driving 24,000 miles around the UK, assessing operators in terms of overall performance, network reliability, network speed, mobile internet, call and text.
