Data centre power outage hits EE’s 4G data services

News: Customers from London to Glasgow were unable to access EE's 4G network.

British mobile network operator EE has restored data services after a power outage to one of its data centres. The company’s customers in several parts of the UK faced difficulties in accessing 4G services.

An EE spokesperson said: "Data services were affected for a small number of customers after one of our data centres experienced a power cut this afternoon caused by a third party.

"We immediately re-routed traffic to minimise disruption, and power was restored within two hours."

The company said it restored the service to the majority of customers, but a very small number of people may still face difficulties connecting to the network.

EE urged customers to switch their device off and on, or enable and disable Airplane Mode to resolve the issue.

The issue impacted customers in London, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and other regions of the UK who are greeted with a PDP authentication error.

Last month, EE suffered an issue which prevented customers from making calls to landline phones. Customers took to social media to highlight the issue and said that they were unable to make calls to landlines.

EE topped the list of broadband and mobile complaints in the third quarter of 2015. Figures from Ofcom revealed that EE proportionally generates the highest number of complaints to the regulator when it comes to broadband, with 45 complaints per 100,000 customers in Q3 2015. This represented an increase from 34 complaints per 100,000 in the previous quarter.

EE provides 4G in approximately 700 towns and cities, as well as providing fibre broadband & EETV.
