Coraid unveils software-defined storage platform EtherCloud

Coraid has unveiled what it calls its software-defined storage infrastructure platform. EtherCloud will offer IT admins much greater flexibility to run their data centre, the company claimed.

The technology comes from Coraid’s 2011 acquisition of Yunteq.

According to the company EtherCloud offers a policy engine and REST APIs that enables IT admins to configure and manage the storage requirements of each application automatically, rather than as a whole and manually. The new system can offer one-click provisioning of enterprise storage configurations, Coraid said.

"EtherCloud breaks through the complexity of legacy storage management, replacing it with a flexible, automated, programmable platform. This allows enterprise and cloud customers to provision and manage petabytes of high-performance block and file storage, with the same simplicity found in consumer cloud services, said Anil Virmani, senior vice president of engineering, in a statement.

Coraid said the issue with traditional data centres is they are "complex, resource-intensive and error-prone at scale," but EtherCloud hopes to change that. The company claims EtherCloud can reduce provisioning times from weeks to minutes.

EtherCloud is expected to be released in Q3 this year.

This announcement confirms what Coraid CEO Kevin Brown told us earlier in the year. Speaking to CBR, he said the fruits of the Yunteq acquisition would be revealed this year.

"How do you handle this massive wave of data expansion and simplify and automate this? We’ve just bought a company [Yunteq] that does cloud automation, because you have Petabytes and Petabytes of storage and you need better tools to manage that," he said, adding that the company will, "add a lot of automation, policy-based provisioning," to Coraid’s portfolio.
