To facilitate the launch of mobile internet service across the US

By CBR Staff Writer

Clearwire Communications has signed an agreement with Huawei as a 4G network infrastructure supplier. The agreement adds Huawei to a vendor list that includes Motorola, Samsung, Cisco, Ciena and DragonWave.

Under the new agreement, Huawei will supply WiMAX radio access network (RAN) equipment to facilitate Clearwire’s launch of mobile internet service across the US, called CLEAR. Specifically, Huawei will provide infrastructure parts, including base stations, element management system (EMS) components, and related network hardware and software.

Wan Biao, president of wireless product line at Huawei, said: “Today’s announcement is an important milestone and represents a significant step towards establishing Huawei’s presence in North America and further demonstrates our commitment to delivering high-quality products and services to our customers.”

Clearwire also named other suppliers for the network launch, which include: Motorola and Samsung for RAN equipment; Cisco for the core Internet Protocol (IP) network infrastructure; Ciena for base station switching; and DragonWave for the network’s microwave backhaul transport; and Motorola to provide additional microwave backhaul equipment.

John Saw, chief technology officer of Clearwire, said: “Our new network is specifically designed to deliver an unmatched combination of 4G speeds, capacity, and mobility to meet the growing demand for wireless broadband services.

“Our existing agreements with Motorola, Samsung, Cisco, and DragonWave, plus today’s addition of Huawei, provide us with the capabilities and support necessary to deliver super fast mobile internet in more ways for both our customers and strategic wholesalers.”
