Cisco unveils telecommunications transport network offering

Internet Protocol based services, such as video, mobility and cloud computing support

By CBR Staff Writer

Cisco has unveiled a new telecommunications transport network offering, the Carrier Packet Transport (CPT) System, which can be used for migrating service provider transport infrastructures to support Internet Protocol (IP)-based services, such as video, mobility and cloud computing.

The new offering combines the reliability of a transport network with the efficiencies of packet technology to deliver current and future services, Cisco said.

The CPT system infuses the agility and efficiencies of a packet network into a transport platform to quickly and dynamically adapt transport networks to new applications while simultaneously reducing capital expenditure costs.

In addition, the CPT system also provides resiliency, predictability, and comprehensive operations, administration and maintenance capabilities.

The CPT system support standards-based multiprotocol label switching transport profile (MPLS-TP), which interoperates seamlessly with MPLS offered on routing products like the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers and Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System.

The company said the new CPT system is available in six-rack unit (CPT 600) and two-rack unit (CPT 200) models, and with a satellite device (CPT 50). The CPT system supports MPLS-TP, Ethernet with rich quality of service and virtual local area networks manipulation capabilities, and optical transport network and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs).
