Brocade boosts data centre agility with VDX 6940 switch

The firm has updated its VCS fabric portfolio.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Brocade has updated its VCS fabric portfolio, in a bid to improve IT agility and to help customers migrate to the New IP. At the heart of the new offering sits the VDX 6940 switch which boasts, the company claims, the industry’s highest port density.

The Brocade VDX 6940 has been designed to give customers greater choice for SDN, cloud orchestration and DevOps initiatives.

As a result, customers can operate their data centres more efficiently, accelerate innovation and ensure that network resources are readily available and automatically provisioned as new services are deployed.

Brocade said the switch also supports Zero-Touch Provisioning capabilities, allowing it to be configured and operational in less than one minute.

Unlike traditional networks where each switch is managed individually, the VDX 6940 also allows customers to scale out the network without adding operational complexity, Brocade said.

Jason Nolet, SVP of Brocade’s Data Centre Switching, Routing, and Analytics Products Group, said: "As the rise of the third platform – including cloud, mobile, social, and Big Data – accelerates, organisations are encountering new requirements and challenges that cannot be addressed with legacy network architectures that were designed for client-server environments.

"Networks must transform from a siloed, static design to an agile, on-demand infrastructure that is automated via data centre orchestration frameworks and programmability."

Brad Casemore, research director, Data Centre Networks, at IDC, added: "By adding these SDN and orchestration capabilities to its Ethernet fabric portfolio, Brocade is helping its customers better align network architecture and operations with applications and developers."
