Apple has announced it has sold over one million iPads, just a month after the new tablet computer hit the market.
The landmark was reached on Friday, 30 April, 28 days after Apple finally unleashed its much-hyped device on the US market. Owners have downloaded over 12 million apps from the app store and 1.5 million eBooks from iBookstore. Apple had previously announced that 300,000 devices were sold on the first day of release.
“One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone”, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers”
The supply issue Jobs mentioned has resulted in Apple delaying the international release of the iPad until the end of May.
The 9.7-inch colour touchscreen device is pitched somewhere between a smartphone and a netbook, so users can surf the web, read and send emails, watch videos, play games and read eBooks. It features a virtual keyboard although users can buy a physical keyboard attachment if they are likely to do a lot of typing on it.
Apple’s most recent financial figures revealed a 49% rise in revenue to $13.50bn, while profit surged 90% to $3.07bn, resulting in the firm’s best ever non-holiday quarter.
