Alcatel-Lucent, Qualcomm partner to develop small cell base stations

The new small cells will allow ultra-broadband wireless communications.

By CBR Staff Writer

A US chipmaker and telecoms equipment group have joined forces to improve wireless connectivity for 3G, 4G and WiFi networks in residential and enterprise environments.

The new small cell base stations to be built by Qualcomm Technologies and French firm Alcatel-Lucent aim to enable ultra-broadband wireless communications.

They will also enable mobile network operators and service providers to cost-effectively meet demand for mobile data capacity and network coverage, with increased use of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices that use high-bandwidth video and gaming applications.

Both companies plan to jointly speed up the implementation of the small cells and reduce the impact of mobile data on wireless networks.

Qualcomm chairman and CEO Paul Jacobs said: "Small cells greatly increase capacity by bringing the network closer to the user, thus enabling operators to serve the anticipated 1000x growth in mobile data traffic and dramatically improving the experience for wireless subscribers."

Additionally, the two companies plan to jointly fund a strategic R&D programme to develop new Alcatel-Lucent light radio small cell products featuring Qualcomm Technologies’s FSM9900 family of small cell chipsets to support the speeding up of faster wireless adoption.
