Adobe Systems has announced plans to make its Open Source Media Framework and Text Layout Framework freely available as open source software for developers, media companies and publishers.

According to Adobe, the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF), part of the project previously code named Strobe, allows developers to build feature-rich media players optimised for the flash platform. The Text Layout Framework (TLF) enables developers to bring typography capabilities to web applications.

Reportedly, the OSMF architecture enables developers to create playback experiences that can leverage plug-ins for advertising, reporting metrics and content delivery along with video player features such as playback controls, video navigation, buffering and dynamic streaming.

The company said that TLF supports complex languages, bidirectional text, multi-columns and other typographical features and controls. It is an extensible ActionScript library developed on the text engine in Adobe Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR 1.5 software.

In addition, the OSMF includes an API for partners to develop plug-ins for value-add services. OSMF, and TLF source code are available under the Mozilla Public License.

Dave McAllister, director of standards and open source at Adobe Systems, said: “By releasing OSMF and TLF as open source, we are helping facilitate the creation and sharing of best practices for media players and rich text-based Web application development. We believe these efforts will strengthen the industry and lead to the next generation of Web applications, content and video experiences.”
