Hewlett-Packard Co saw turnover from its Eastern and Central European operations nearly double to $91m during 1992 due to a 50% jump in Hungarian sales to $16m, and a 32% rise in Polish revenues to $26m. The Czech and Slovak republics jointly generated sales of $44m. The figures were further bolstered by a $10.5m deal, signed in April with the Prague-based Universal Health Insurance Company, to supply an unspecified number of HP 9000 Series 800 Unix servers. But the results do not include a contract won by the group at the end of December, following a tender carried out with the European Community, to provide the Polish Central Customs Board with HP 9000 Unix machines. Hewlett-Packard’s single largest contract in the region to date, valued at $14m, involved the automation of the Polish State Forest Administration. The agreement was announced in November 1991, and ironically, Poland suffered the worst forest fires in its entire history during 1992.
