Cypress Semiconductor Corp, of San Jose, California has taken leadership of the Sun Microsystems Sparc world by coming out with a 33MHz version of the part – in 0.8 micron CMOS against the 1.5 micron used by Fujitsu in its 25MHz version. The CY7C601-33 is claimed to offer 20 times the performance of a DEC VAX-11/780, five times the 80386. The set includes 7C608 floating point controller and 7C603 memory management unit. The 7C601 is $634 for 100-up, and is sampling now. The full Cypress set is around $3,000.
